Chapter Fifteen

I am overthinking this.

Auggie studied the bed tray he’d organized three times in the last two minutes, needing it to be perfect. His system was set to wake him up around eight o’clock every morning, whether he had to work or not, and today was no exception. He’d spent a few minutes watching Elliott sleep, enjoying the way he was so totally relaxed and smiling into the pillow.

He had also, for the first time, noticed the long scar on Elliott’s left arm. Thin and pale, it went from wrist to elbow. Scars like that were rarely accidental. The discovery, coupled with the box cutter comments at dinner the night before, had rattled him into getting out of bed. He wanted to ask Elliott about it, much as his possible answer terrified him.

He went downstairs to make them breakfast in bed. He didn’t often cook for himself, thanks to his ever-changing schedule, so he didn’t keep a lot of fresh groceries in the house. The best he could do was frozen waffles, orange segments, juice and coffee. Real maple syrup made the whole thing seem less cheap.

A vase with some sort of flower in it would have made it a little more perfect, but it was early March and he didn’t own a bud vase anyway.

He had to laugh at this new side of himself that fixated over bud vases and maple syrup.

A little after nine, he carried the tray to the bedroom, unsurprised to see Elliott still fast asleep. He hadn’t been an early riser the entire week Auggie had filmed in the Crispin house, and they’d had quite the explosive workout last night. Auggie knew being with Elliott would be amazing, but he hadn’t expected the level of wow that had been their lovemaking. And that’s what it had been. Not sex. Making love.

He set the tray on the dresser, then rubbed Elliott’s exposed shoulder. Elliott mumbled and leaned into the touch, rolling onto his back, still asleep.

Asleep and utterly adorable, with creases on his cheek and his hair askew.

He leaned over. “Elliott?”

“Mfph?” The response was followed by a long, jaw-popping yawn. Elliott finally blinked open sleepy eyes. “Hey.”

“Good morning.”

“Is it already?”

“Yes.”

“It’s too soon. Come back to bed.”

“And waste my lovely breakfast-in-bed surprise?”

“Your what?” Elliott sat up with a soft groan. His eyebrows jumped when he spotted the tray. “Wow. Really? Could you be more perfect?”

Auggie tried not to flinch. “I’m not perfect.”

“No? You open my car door every single time. You know the best places to eat. You escort me to the front door. You carried me upstairs. You made breakfast in bed after fucking me into a near-coma. You’re, like, the perfect boyfriend.”

Elliott’s cheeks pinked up and his eyes went wide. Auggie’s chest puffed a bit at the compliment.

“Um, not that you’re my boyfriend or anything,” Elliott said, sputtering adorably over his perceived faux pas. “I’m just saying you would be. For someone. Breakfast?”

Auggie had pity and let the topic go. He liked the idea of being Elliott’s boyfriend.
